Can I add a shipping surcharge?

With the powerful Connex Rules Engine, you can instruct Connex to mark up shipping by a specific amount, sometimes referred to as a surcharge.

What is a "shipping surcharge"?

A surcharge is often defined as a “service fee” or “shipping and handling fee.” 

A surcharge is typically an extra charge added on to the stated price of goods or services, added to an existing tax or added as a stand-alone charge. Sometimes, surcharges are added on as temporary measures to defray the costs of increased commodity pricing (e.g., fuel surcharge), or they are used as regular and permanent fees.

How does this work?

Using the Connex Rules Engine, a rule must be added to instruct Connex to add a specified amount to the shipping cost of the label.

Consider this use case:

  1. Create an invoice in QuickBooks.
  2. Sync this invoice from QuickBooks to your shipping solution.
  3. Ship the order.
  4. Update the QuickBooks sale with the shipping cost.
  5. Connex will mark up the cost, which you will invoice to your customer.

If I want to add a dollar amount, how do I add the rule?

In this example, we will add $1.50 to shipping for orders shipping USPS:

  1. Login to Connex.
  2. From the dashboard, on the left, click Rules > My Rules.
  3. Click Add New Rule.
  4. Next, select Start from scratch.
  5. Name the rule. This is arbitrary.
  6. For the rule action, choose "Add shipping surcharge."
  7. Add this trigger and comparison:
  8. Click next.
  9. Enter 1.50 in the map to field. Do not enter a dollar or currency sign.

This rule does not work with a "Map All" comparison. "Map All" is only used when mapping all data housed within one field to another.

Can I mark up by a percent?

Yes, instead of entering 1.50 enter 10% to mark up by 10%.

If using Manual Shipments, you need to map the Shipping Cost to the Shipping Price?

By default, we sync shipping price. The surcharge increments the total shipping costs. This field is not mapped to the shipping price for manual shipments. Therefore, you need to add another rule. In addition to the surcharge rule above, add this rule:

  1. Click Add New Rule.
  2. Click Start from scratch.
  3. As the action, choose Map Shipping Price

  5. Map To: [leave blank]

Can I add an item called "handling" to the sale?

You could configure our merchant fees feature to add an amount to each sale. The feature is built to add a negative number, but with proper settings a positive is added. Here are the steps:

  1. Login to Connex.
  2. From the dashboard, click Manage.
  3. Expand "merchant fees."
  4. In the name field, enter "handling" (though you can name this whatever you wish).
  5. When finished, click the blue Save Settings button on the upper-right or bottom-right.
  6. Next, from the dashboard, click Rules > My Rules.
  7. Add this rule.
